A specialized training workshop aimed at enhancing marine and coastal biodiversity management was recently held in St. Kitts and Nevis, from August 19-23. This initiative was a part of the Biodiversity Support Programme for ACP Coastal Environments (BioSPACE), funded by the European Union, and it focused on equipping local stakeholders with crucial conservation skills.

Focus on the Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (METT)

The workshop centered around the Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (METT), a key component of the BioSPACE initiative. The primary goal was to empower stakeholders in St. Kitts and Nevis to manage, conserve, and sustainably utilize their marine and coastal biodiversity. Participants learned how to use the METT to assess the current management status of the Saint Kitts Nevis Marine Managed Area (SKNMMA), especially at key sites like Dieppe Bay, Sandy Point, Old Road, Basseterre, New Castle, Charlestown, and Indian Castle.

Gathering Data for Effective Management

During the workshop, participants collected vital data to help create a comprehensive management plan for SKNMMA. This involved identifying weaknesses within the existing management framework and determining areas that need improvement. The detailed assessments aimed to ensure that these areas are effectively managed to meet conservation goals.

Training and Preparation for Better Assessments

Participants were trained in using the METT 4 tool, which evaluates habitats, species, threats, and values. To ensure readiness, pre-workshop preparation included webinars that outlined how to conduct these assessments accurately. This preparatory work helped participants contribute effectively during the workshop sessions.

Introduction to the Open Standards for Conservation

The workshop also introduced a broader strategic process called the Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation, developed by the Conservation Measures Partnership (CMP). This methodology has been successfully applied in other regions, including Saint Lucia’s Pointe Sable Environmental Protection Area. The approach is expected to guide the development of an effective management plan for SKNMMA.

Part of a Larger Regional Effort

This workshop is a component of the broader BioSPACE project, a five-year EU-funded initiative aimed at improving the management and sustainable use of marine and coastal resources across the region. It was developed in response to capacity needs assessments conducted across OECS Member States, specifically addressing the needs identified by stakeholders in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Moving Forward with Enhanced Skills and Knowledge

By the end of the workshop, participants were not only more knowledgeable but also prepared to apply their new skills to ensure the long-term sustainability of their country’s marine and coastal biodiversity. The successful completion of this workshop marks a significant step forward in better managing the Saint Kitts Nevis Marine Managed Area. The data and insights gathered will be crucial in developing a robust management plan that addresses current challenges and strengthens the region’s capacity to protect its invaluable marine resources.
