Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew expressed deep appreciation for Southern University and A&M College’s partnership with St. Kitts and Nevis during his October 8th “Roundtable” address. The collaboration has opened doors for educational and agricultural advancements that benefit the people of the Federation.
Dr. Drew’s remarks came after his October 2nd visit to Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he met with Chairman Myron Lawson, other board members, and President Dennis Shields. The discussions focused on enhancing educational opportunities and advancing agricultural initiatives for Kittitians and Nevisians.
“Scholarships to an American university are unheard of [here],” Dr. Drew noted, thanking Special Envoy Her Excellency Hadiya Claxton for paving the way. The talks resulted in five annual full scholarships for St. Kitts and Nevis citizens. The scholarships will cover Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness, Animal Science, Plant and Soil Science, and Pre-Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Drew emphasized the significance of these educational opportunities at a prestigious U.S. institution, saying, “This is a significant development.” He commended the university’s commitment to supporting the Federation.
The partnership extends beyond education. Dr. Drew revealed ongoing efforts to tap Southern University’s expertise in developing the local cannabis industry. “Their experts are helping us free of cost to get our cannabis industry on the way,” he said, pointing to the university’s leading cannabis research program in the U.S.
Southern University has also provided hands-on support in agriculture. A livestock expert recently visited the Federation to assist with animal husbandry, focusing on egg production. “They are helping us at no cost,” Dr. Drew added, underscoring the university’s role in boosting local food production.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed his government’s commitment to exploring international collaborations to create growth and new opportunities for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
